It has come to the attention of AEDARSA that some passenger ropeway operators may be transporting explosives on their ropeways when they are open to the public.
AEDARSA reminds everyone of the requirements of Clause 11.6.11 of the CSA Z98-01 Safety Standard for Passenger Ropeways and Conveyors. Item (b) of this clause states, that explosives shall not be transported when passengers are on the ropeway. This has been a requirement of the CSA Z98 since the 1996 version of the Standard was published. The CSA Z98-96 was adopted in Alberta on November 1, 1997.
Effective immediately the above requirements of the CSA Z98 must be followed.
Prior to the start of the 2004-2005 operating season, AEDARSA will be checking with all operators that use explosives as part of their operation to ensure that they are complying with this important safety requirement.
AEDARSA will also request that you have a written policy relating to transportation of explosives on ropeways. This policy will ensure all staff involved in the transportation of explosives on ropeways be properly trained and made aware of their responsibilities under the CSA Z98 Safety Standard and Alberta Workplace Health and Safety.
Could you please review this Safety Notice with the appropriate staff at your area and contact AEDARSA if you have concerns or questions.
