IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE
to OWNERS and OPERATORS of DOPPELMAYR SURFACE LIFTS

April 28, 2003

Our file: 5737-0 & 5738-0

RE: Dismantling, inspection and overhaul of Doppelmayr surface lift sheave assemblies.

This notice is the result of the failure of a suspension axle on a Doppelmayr T-Bar 2D/2T Type BC sheave assembly; the failure of this axle allowed part of the assembly to fall to the ground.

Z98 CODE REQUIREMENT

Clause 11.21 of the CSA-Z98-01 Code for Passenger Ropeways requires that manufacturer’s maintenance procedures be followed. On November 24, 1998, Doppelmayr issued a Supplementary Operating and Service Manual for surface lifts. Section 15 (page 39) deals with the overhaul of lift components. Item 15.5 states all sheave assemblies must be dismantled, inspected and overhauled after 10 years or 15,000 hours of operation.

REQUIRED ACTION

If you have not overhauled your sheave assemblies within the last 10 years or 15,000 operating hours, you will be required to meet this maintenance requirement before the start of the 2003-2004 operating season. Please ensure all work relating to this overhaul is recorded in your maintenance logs.

Feel free to contact AEDARSA Edmonton office if you have any questions about this safety notice. Please contact Doppelmayr Lifts directly (250-765-3000) if you do not have a copy of their Supplementary Operating and Service Manuals for Surface Lifts.

Sincerely,

Dave Looney

Safety Codes Officer
